About us
LokalKraft Energiegemeinschaften is a non-profit association based in Altlengbach (Lower Austria), founded in 2024. We promote, coordinate and support renewable energy communities across Austria — and see ourselves as a platform for knowledge sharing, cooperation and advocacy on behalf of our members.
What we take care of
Energy communities should be generating and sharing energy — not wading through paperwork. That is why LokalKraft handles the work around it for its members:
- Web presence: Every member community gets its own website (microsite) within the shared system — with its own look and feel, news, events, forms and accessible technology. We take care of operation, maintenance and ongoing development.
- Administration: Content, team access and events are managed centrally; the communities work in a shared, easy-to-use editorial environment.
- Paperwork: We provide support with founding an association, the Austrian Register of Associations (ZVR), statutes, applications and dealings with the authorities — backed by experience and templates.
- Knowledge & networking: Advice, training and information events on founding and running energy communities; exchange between members; joint advocacy towards authorities, grid operators and funding bodies.

A short glossary
- BEG (citizen energy community)
An energy community without geographic restriction within Austria, limited to electricity; no reduction in grid charges (Section 16b ElWOG 2010, Section 79 EAG 2021).
- EEG (renewable energy community)
A community within the local area of the electricity grid that generates and shares exclusively renewable energy. Local (same transformer) or regional (same substation) — with reduced grid charges.
- GEA (joint generation facility)
A jointly used generation facility (e.g. PV on an apartment building) whose electricity is distributed directly among the participants.
- Grid charge
The fee for using the electricity grid. EEGs pay a reduced energy rate for electricity consumed within the community (local −57%, regional −28%).
- Prosumer
A household or business that both consumes and generates electricity (e.g. with a PV system) — the backbone of every energy community.
- Smart meter
A digital electricity meter that records quarter-hourly values — a technical prerequisite for participating in an energy community.
