5-Megawatt Storage System in Timelkam: Energie AG Puts Upper Austria's Largest Battery Storage System into Operation

At the Timelkam power plant site, Energie AG Oberösterreich has put into operation a battery storage system that is considered the largest facility of its kind in the state. The storage system delivers around 5 megawatts with a usable capacity of 14.5 megawatt-hours — roughly equivalent to 1,450 private household storage units. The project, costing around 4 million euros, was implemented together with the German storage specialist Intilion, with lithium iron phosphate cell technology as the technical basis, achieving approximately 500 full cycles per year.
From Energie AG's perspective, the facility is a targeted building block for the state's energy future: generation, grids, and storage must in future be thought of as an overall system. This is precisely where the storage system comes in, by balancing short-term fluctuations between generation and consumption and thus facilitating the integration of wind and solar power.
For energy communities, this expansion is relevant because large-scale storage systems like the one in Timelkam stabilize the overall system and thereby help cushion extreme price swings in the electricity market — an effect from which ultimately all market participants benefit, even though the facility itself is not a community project.
