Photovoltaic Systems Past Feed-In Support: Continue Operating, Retrofit, or Rebuild?

Ausgeförderte Photovoltaik: Weiterbetreiben, nachrüsten oder neu bauen?

After 20 years of state feed-in tariffs, an increasing number of photovoltaic systems in Austria are facing a turning point: the subsidy is expiring, and operators must decide how to proceed. For now, smaller rooftop systems under ten kilowatts of capacity are particularly affected, as these were typical in the early years of solar subsidies – back then, the modules still delivered significantly less yield than modern technology does today.

That said, not every system past its 20-year mark is automatically in need of renovation. Some operators simply keep their existing system running, others opt for a conversion or partial replacement, and still others choose a complete new installation. The appeal of renewal is obvious: with today's technology, the same roof area can often achieve four times the output.

For installers and energy communities, this transition opens up a new field of consulting and modernization. Those who expertly guide operators through the decision between continued operation, conversion, and new construction also strengthen decentralized energy structures locally – a business area that is likely to gain noticeable importance in the coming years.
