Battery storage worldwide on record course: Sungrow leads new market ranking

The market for battery energy storage systems (BESS) crossed an important threshold in 2025: for the first time, more than 100 gigawatts of storage capacity were installed worldwide. This scale shows how strongly storage technologies have now established themselves as a supporting pillar of the energy transition – alongside generation and grid infrastructure.
The market research company Wood Mackenzie has for the first time published a comprehensive ranking of global BESS integrators. According to it, Sungrow leads the ranking, followed by Tesla and CATL. Such a ranking provides an overview of which companies are significantly driving the global expansion of storage capacities.
For energy communities, this development is relevant because battery storage is increasingly playing a role in using self-generated electricity more flexibly and shifting generation peaks in time. A growing, highly competitive global market can also have a long-term impact on the availability and cost development of storage technologies.
