New Building Modernisation Act gives boost to the heating transition

Since 29 July 2026, the Austrian Building Modernisation Act (Gebäudemodernisierungsgesetz) has been in force. This creates new framework conditions intended to facilitate and accelerate the shift from fossil heating systems to renewable heating solutions – a central building block for the heating transition in Austria.
The fact that this path is also gaining importance across Europe is shown by current EU studies: according to these, demand for natural gas could fall by a quarter by 2030 through decentralised renewable energy and heat pumps. This underlines how important local solutions are becoming for energy supply.
This is precisely where energy communities come in: they pool renewable energy locally and offer members a practical way to actively participate in this development. The new legal framework conditions thus also strengthen the role of energy communities as local solution providers in the heating and energy transition.
