Photovoltaics in Transition: Small Rooftop Systems Decline, Large-Scale Projects Grow

The photovoltaic market is changing its face: while in the past many small and medium-sized rooftop systems characterized new installations, the emphasis is increasingly shifting toward large solar parks. The total number of newly installed systems has declined significantly, with commercial systems between 30 and 750 kW output particularly affected, some of which are recording massive downturns. Large-scale projects above 750 kW, however, show a stable picture, even with rising average sizes of newly registered systems.

As a result, the total installed capacity remains at a remarkably high level despite the declining number of systems, because individual large solar parks deliver correspondingly more output than many small rooftop systems combined. A similar development can be seen with battery storage systems: here too, it is the large storage solutions above 750 kWh that are driving growth, while smaller and medium-sized storage capacities are losing significance.

For energy communities, this trend is relevant because it shows the direction in which the market is developing: larger, bundled projects are gaining weight compared to many small individual systems. This can also influence cooperation within communities, for instance when shared larger systems become more economically attractive than many individual rooftop installations.
