Why energy communities are hitting their limits despite growth

Energy communities in Austria continue to grow – yet the real brake lies elsewhere: market design. As "Der Standard" analyzes, the inadequate structuring of the Austrian electricity market remains the fundamental hurdle to genuine scaling of energy communities. It is therefore not enough for more and more households and businesses to join together into communities – as long as the market's framework conditions do not keep pace, the potential remains limited.
Yet there is no lack of technical expertise: PV Austria is regarded as an established center of competence for the industry and can already look back on 30 years of experience. This knowledge shows that the technical and organizational foundations for expansion have long been in place – but the structural questions of market design remain unresolved.
For members of energy communities, this means: the path to greater energy autonomy leads not only through committed local projects, but also through the question of how the electricity market as a whole is structured. This debate will continue to accompany the industry.
