When solar power becomes an energy donation: pilot project helps households at risk of poverty

In Austria, according to EU statistics, around 360,000 people, or about four percent of households, cannot afford an adequately heated home. This is precisely where the project "Energiespenden 2.0" comes in, which Salzburg Research is developing together with Our Power, Enixi and Robin Powerwood. The goal is to channel surplus solar power from energy communities specifically to households at risk of poverty, thereby making the social side of the energy transition visible.

Robin Powerwood is already among the pioneers of this approach: since 2023, the initiative has operated an Austria-wide energy community through which around 750 megawatt hours of electricity, worth about 100,000 euros, have been donated so far. The number of donors has increased significantly in recent months. However, the current model is reaching technical limits, because generation and consumption are only balanced within narrow 15-minute windows – as a result, surplus donations often cannot be fully utilized, while additional electricity has to be purchased regularly during other time periods.

This is precisely the weak point that "Energiespenden 2.0" addresses: Salzburg Research is testing a technical solution to pool unused energy surpluses, so that more donated energy actually reaches the affected households. At the same time, a uniform service design, standardized processes and a catalog of measures are to be developed, making energy communities even more inclusive in the future.
