14,000 metering points: Energy communities continue to grow

Regional electricity generation and distribution is gaining noticeable importance in Austria. More than 14,000 metering points are now connected to corresponding energy cooperatives, through which around ten million kWh of jointly generated electricity is shared among members. That corresponds roughly to the annual consumption of 2,500 households – a clear signal of how decentralized, renewable energy supply is establishing itself in practice.

The model is based on a simple principle: producers and consumers of renewable energy join forces, with electricity produced and distributed directly on site. The basis for this is primarily photovoltaic systems, supplemented by hydropower and wind power. For participating households, this is meant to result in noticeable savings compared to conventional energy providers. Municipalities also benefit, as they can reduce energy costs for public facilities such as kindergartens or street lighting.

The model, originally developed in Burgenland – where every fourth municipality is already involved – has spread across Austria since its founding in 2022. There are now more than 200 energy cooperatives with over 52,000 participants. This development shows how regional alliances are increasingly becoming a mainstay of domestic energy supply.
